Brushing up on your paintwork
If there’s one DIY job we all think we can tackle ourselves, it’s painting. Here are my tips for getting the best finish.
When buying paint and brushes, always take advice from staff. They’ll give you the best options and solutions. A water-based emulsion is best for walls and ceilings and is applied over two coats. The first acts as an undercoat.
Don’t confuse matt emulsion with silk. Matt is flat and tends not to show up defects as it’s non-reflective, but it marks easily and can’t be washed. Silk looks shiny but is slightly more difficult to roll on, so watch out for roller marks. It can be wiped down, so it’s suitable for kids’ rooms.
Water-based paints are easily cleaned from brushes and rollers with warm water.
Solvent or oil-based paints are mainly for woodwork. You need to apply an undercoat before the top coat whether it be gloss, eggshell or satin.
The paint is best applied with a brush, allowing for two thin coats to avoid runs.
You should sand between coats for a smooth finish.
Solvent or oil-based paints are cleaned from the brush using white spirits.
Water-based gloss has a much faster drying time.
